Clare Hughes

Clare HughesI obtained a BA in Art & Design from Bradford Art College in 1986. In 2001, after studying part-time while working as an interior designer, I gained an MA from Manchester University School of Architecture, where the subject of my research was Interior Design. For the past 15 years I’ve been running my own Interior Design business.
In 2008 I moved down to Cornwall, promising myself I would pick up my paintbrushes again - and I finally did in January 2016. I enrolled on a part-time acrylics painting course at Truro College, and continued with the classes for 18 months, during which time I felt I grew both in ability and confidence.
Inspiration for my work comes from the rich Cornish landscape we are surrounded by, from the beautiful coastal sea views to the rugged tin mine ruins and mining trails. I often venture out on my bike, armed with sketchbook and camera, and take photos, and then work on quick sketches from the surroundings. I follow this up by composing my paintings using acrylics.

I joined Taking Space in November 2017, which I see as an excellent opportunity for expanding my friendships within the artistic community. I particularly look forward to taking an active part in improving the visibility of women’s art in Cornwall. I have found Taking Space to be a friendly and inclusive group of women, who have made me very welcome right from the start. I look forward to participating in a wide range of exhibitions with them.
