Diana Johnstone

Diana JohnstoneAfter a childhood in Cornwall, I moved to London, where I studied Textile Design at Camberwell School of Art. This was followed by a 20-year career in film set design as a prop buyer/set dresser/art director, which included some magazine illustration work and photographic styling.

On return visits to Cornwall over the years, I was inspired to draw and paint ‘en plein air’. During this time I exhibited with CADA (Commercial Art Directors’ Association) and at a number of venues in London including The Mall Galleries.

Moving to Wiltshire, I attended life-painting classes in Bath and began to paint in oils. Participation in a weekly painting group with other artists led to further exhibitions, combined sometimes with performances of my own songs.

In recent years I have attended two Abstract Art Intensive Summer Schools at Falmouth University, followed by the Defining Practice course at Newlyn School of Art. Since settling back in Cornwall, I have enrolled on the Studio Practice course, also at Newlyn.

Currently I am using my response to the natural world as my artistic starting point. I also express connections to family through memorabilia and place, using different materials and surfaces. Repeat patterns both in my songs and in the work explore textile design and the world of the feminine. Time, rhythm, pattern, order and chance are the threads which, drawn together, inform my abstract style.
